Packlist List When Traveling to Ethiopia

The climate will range from mild in Addis Ababa, cold in Simien Mountains and slightly humid/hot in the South. Ethiopian weather is such that it is hot in the day time and can be the opposite in the evening and night times

Deep in the countryside, we recommend women to dress slightly conservatively – covering their shoulders and below their knees.

Clothing and Gear

  • Long pants for trekking and walking around during colder weather
  • Shorts and light/bright color shirts/tshirts for walking around during hot temperature days
  • Clothes for chilly weather at night time (especially in the Tigray, Simien and Lalibela mountains)
  • Sunglasses
  • Hiking shoes or sneakers
  • Basic backpack
  • Sandals
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Chapstick
  • Mosquito protection (the hotels in the South come with mosquito nets but I suggest bringing additional protection)

Documents

  • Passport
  • Ethiopian Visa (attainable at time of arrival)
  • Cash in popular currencies and/or well-recognized brand cards (Visa and Mastercard). Most ATMs in Ethioopia take visa and mastercard

Gifts for the Ethiopian people (optional)

When visiting Ethiopian family homes for coffee ceremony or accidently, it would make your experience more fulfilling if you bring some thoughtful gifts with you. We suggest:

  • Sweets: Chocolates, candies, gums for kids
  • Kid books, pens and pencils
  • Anything that represents your place of origin (American tshirts, hats, etc)
